The National Police has closed the investigation into the injuries sustained by journalist and TV presenter Yuriy Makarov, finding that the injuries were self-inflicted, the Kyiv National Police HQ reported on July 31.

“The police thoroughly reviewed all available surveillance camera footage, interviewed dozens of potential eyewitnesses, and conducted an investigative experiment: at the time the the victim was injured, there were no outsiders near him,” the police said.

They added that the police had seized the alleged weapon — a knife and its sheath, which were found nearby, and sent everything for examination.

“The expert examination found that the DNA samples taken from the physical evidence belong to the victim alone, which indicates that the man inflicted the injuries on himself,” the National Police said.

They reported that Yuriy Makarov had undergone a comprehensive forensic psychological and psychiatric examination, which found that the man had an acute reaction to stress at the time he was injured, which could have influenced his actions.

“The victim agreed with the findings of the examination. The case was closed after all the circumstances were established,” the police concluded.

Previously

Yuriy Makarov, executive producer at Suspilne Broadcasting and a prominent journalist, was attacked and stabbed by an unknown man late on April 16.

The police later opened a case and shared the details of the attack on Yuriy Makarov. Law enforcers are looking into the theory that the attack could have had a pro-Russian trail.

On May 21, Suspilne Broadcasting executive producer, prominent journalist Yuriy Makarov apologized for the “anxiety and pain” caused by his injury. He was ashamed and upset to have “found himself in the spotlight in a way that is, to put it mildly, unreflective of the situation.”

On the same day, Suspilne asked Yuriy Makarov's colleagues to consider his difficult condition after what he experienced and to respect his physical and mental recovery needs.
